Registrations in Italy: collapse in the South

Il Italian car marketawaiting the final data in December, is closing 2025 with a slight decline in registrations (-2.8% compared to 2024). This result is naturally linked to multiple factors and some segments, such as the electric one, are recording excellent results. A geographical analysis, however, confirms a very different trend in deliveries of new cars based on the area of the country considered. In particular, the Sud is highlighting a drastic decline of car sales in comparison with last year’s data. Other areas are also in difficulty and, numbers in hand, only Central Italy is recording substantial growth. Let’s take stock of the situation.

A clear drop

Despite a minimal decline on a national basis, the area ofSouthern Italy is preparing to close 2025 with a net reduction in registrations. The confirmation comes from the latest UNRAE data (updated at the end of November 2025). According to this data, this area of the country sees a decline equal to -12,9% with a market share of 9.6% (-1.1 percentage points compared to last year). Overall, sales amounted to 136 thousand units in the period considered.

This is a decidedly worse result than that highlighted by the national data. The reasons may be different (a lower contribution from electric and plug-in hybrid cars can be hypothesized as well as a greater use of used cars) but the data is clear. The impact of rental on sales that differs based on the area of the country considered could also be taken into account, but data of this type are not available at the moment. The South will close 2025 with a sharp reduction in registered units.

The graph below summarizes the overall data for the five areas of the country (north-west, north-east, central, south and islands). If, however, you want to delve deeper into the sales trend on a national scale, we refer you to the in-depth analysis dedicated to registrations in Italy after 11 months of 2025.

The other areas of the country

It is not only southern Italy that is in difficulty in terms of registrations. Even thenorth-eastern Italy is recording negative numbers, with registrations in 9% drop compared to the data recorded last year and a market share that is reduced to 29.4% (with a loss of 2 percentage points). Registrations stop at 419 thousand units. Another area in difficulty is theInsular Italy. In this case, registrations amounted to just over 72 thousand units with a drop of 4.9%. Of note, however, is a slight growth in car sales in the area north west which, with 421 thousand units distributed, records a 0.7% improvement and a share of 29.5% (+1 percentage point). The best data among the five areas of the country considered by the UNRAE analysis is that ofItalia central where deliveries reached 357 thousand units, with a 6% increase compared to last year’s data. In this case, the market share is 26.5% (+2.2 points). Complete data for 2025 will be published early next year. In any case, the trend (after 11 months) is now consolidated and clearly shows the differences in terms of new car sales between the various areas of the country.
