Tyrrhenian Link, Terna’s world record: submarine electrical cables laid at 2,150 metres

Sassari Terna has established a new world record in the laying of submarine electrical cables during the works of Tyrrhenian Linkthe power line that will connect Sicily and Sardinia. For the first time a high voltage direct current power cable was installed at a depth of 2,150 metres, in the first section of the West Branch of the infrastructure.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with Nexans, a group specialized in the design and production of cable connection systems. The completion of the laying of the first western branch, between Sicily e Sardiniais expected by the end of 2025.

In the coming months the same depth record will also be achieved in the second section of the West Branch by Prysmian, after the success of the sea trial test for the installation of the 500 kV cable conducted in 2024 in 2,150 meters.

The project also includes the Eastern Branch, which will unite Campania and Sicily. In this section the laying of the first cable was completed in May, while the installation of the second began at the beginning of December. The project involves a total of approximately 490 kilometers of direct current cable, with a maximum depth of 1,560 metres, between Fiumetorto, in the province of Palermo, and Torre Tuscia Magazzeno, in the Salerno area.

With an overall length of approx 970 kilometersa power of 1.000 MW and a total investment of 3.7 billion euros — of which 500 million financed through the REPowerEU Plan for the Eastern Branch — the Tyrrhenian Link is the most important work ever carried out by the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia. Infrastructure is considered strategic for the national energy transition: it will increase the electricity exchange capacity between islands and the peninsula, strengthen market integration and improve the security and stability of the electricity systems of Sardinia, Sicily and Campania, contributing to the decarbonisation objectives of the PNIEC.
