Brindisi, a crossroads of yellow and black authors and books

BRINDISI – The second edition of “Giallo e Nero di Puglia”, a literary festival organized by the Nuovo Teatro Verdi Foundation with the support of the Municipality of Brindisi, was presented yesterday morning (27 April) in the Sala della Colonna of Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna in Brindisi . The meeting, moderated by the coordinator Regina Cesta, saw the participation of the mayor of Brindisi, Giuseppe Marchionna, and the writer Barbara Perna in her dual role as artistic director and president of the quality jury. “Giallo e Nero di Puglia” returns this year with its crossroads of authors and works dedicated to noir, thriller and mystery genre literature, an exclusive meeting point for writers and crime novelists.

The festival thus aims to ignite the “yellow passion” by addressing a diverse audience and promoting one of the most popular genres of contemporary reading. During the conference, the details of the competition were illustrated, which this year revolves around the active involvement of the publishing houses who will propose the names of the competing authors for the “published works” category. The title of winner will be awarded in the final scheduled for the last Saturday of November 2024. The first edition, reserved for unpublished works, saw an extraordinary participation of debuting authors and ended with the victory of Ilaria Ferramosca with “Nel passa di Magritte”, a novel which will be published by Giunti Editore next autumn.

Last year, the Foundation nominated the competition for the public notice for the recognition of festivals and literary prizes as part of the “Puglia Book Festival Network”, promoted by the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, a call which placed “Giallo e Nero di Puglia” among the most important initiatives in the regional territory. An objective that consolidates the reputation of the competition and also amplifies its visibility and cultural impact.

«Our festival – explained the mayor, Giuseppe Marchionna – is conceived as a long-term event, with the ambition of becoming a significant point of reference in the Italian literary panorama, and of contributing to the literary culture of our region and beyond. The idea was born from the consideration of Puglia as an ideal setting for events of this kind, a region rich in history and culture, but until now lacking a festival specifically dedicated to the world of noir. Despite the initial challenges and the lack of specific precedents in this area, we felt it was time to act. Thanks to the unconditional support of friends and collaborators, including Barbara Perna, today we can give continuity to this initiative. The festival is a cultural journey that we hope will lead to a renewed interest in Italian noir, involving renowned authors and new voices in a creative and stimulating dialogue.”

Barbara Perna underlined how “Giallo e Nero di Puglia” is a precious platform for authors who can enrich their work and their understanding of the genre. This type of interaction is essential to encourage an ongoing passion for reading and writing within narrative categories. «The South has a desperate need for cultural initiatives – underlined the Neapolitan author -, and this festival is a quality novelty in our landscape. The vision is to offer an exclusive event and create a network of cultural synergies across the South, leveraging the peculiarities and unique capabilities of this area. What the mayor has always supported, that is, that the South can and must play a preponderant role in the cultural dialogue of the country, finds full realization in “Giallo e Nero di Puglia”. I am enthusiastic about the initiative which, I am sure, will serve as a catalyst for interest in literature in general. The festival is an open invitation to discover and rediscover the pleasure of reading, an activity that nourishes the soul and enriches the mind. With every book we open and every story we tell, we strengthen that vital connection between writer and reader that is essential to the survival and vitality of our industry.”
