The book

The essay reconstructs fifty years of political history of the country, retracing the historical story of the Christian Democracy. Was the DC really the “party of the nation”? This was also the case, the authors explain, especially in the final part of his story. But it was first of all a party with plural souls that pursued the democratic and constitutional reconstruction of the country, projecting it into an unprecedented European horizon. A Catholic-inspired party that contributed to lifting Italy out of poverty, the humiliation of the war catastrophe and international isolation, through many personalities of high competence and moral value. In the essay, 50 years of generations that have taken turns at the helm of the Christian Democracy flow. Thirty years after his death, the definition of the role of the DC in the history of Italy still oscillates between demonization and regret, without settling into a balanced historicization. Guido Formigoni teaches contemporary history at the IULM University of Milan. Among the books published by him, Il Mulino stands out: «Essential history of republican Italy» (2021). Paolo Pombeni is professor emeritus at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna. With the Mulino he also published «The opening. Italy and the centre-left (1953-1963)”. Giorgio Vecchio taught contemporary history at the University of Parma and is president of the scientific committee of the Alcide Cervi Institute and that of the Don Primo Mazzolari Foundation. Among his most recent publications «The breath of the Spirit. Catholics in the European Resistances” (Viella, 2022), in addition to the curatorship of “Emilio Sereni. The intellectual and the politician” (Carocci, 2019).
