Cepell, the “May Book Prize” returns

The Center for books and reading, to enhance the national campaign for the promotion of reading Il Maggio dei Libri – organized every year by the Center with the involvement of local authorities, libraries, bookshops, cultural associations, schools, festivals, publishers, as well as to multiple public and private entities -, has announced the thirteenth edition of the ‘il Maggio dei Libri’ Award. Created to encourage and stimulate the habit of reading, the Award consists of awarding the five best reading promotion projects carried out in each of the following categories: Libraries, Cultural Associations, Schools, Prisons, healthcare and reception facilities for elderly, bookshops.

The Award aims to be an opportunity to recognize and enhance the commitment of those who have joined the campaign, promoting good practices and encouraging participation in future editions. The Award is aimed at reading promotion projects carried out during the May of Books 2024 initiative within each of the following categories: Libraries, media libraries and library systems; Associations, cultural institutes, study and research centres; Educational institutions; Prisons, healthcare and elderly care facilities; Bookshops. Projects whose organizer does not belong to one of these categories will not be taken into consideration. Subjects who have been awarded in previous editions will not be able to compete.

The most original and innovative initiatives will be taken into consideration, but above all those that network with other local entities, in particular following the adhesion to the “Local Pacts for Reading”. Furthermore, as regards educational institutions, the initiatives born in the context of Libriamoci 2023 which have had a continuous nature, i.e. which involve multiple phases, and have concluded in Il Maggio dei Libri 2024 will be taken into consideration. The individual book presentations are excluded from the selection of projects competing for the Award, unless they fall within a more complex program that includes different types of activities.

An initial evaluation of the initiatives, in the form of pre-selection, will be carried out internally by representatives of the Centre. The organizers of the pre-selected initiatives will be asked for photos, videos and a detailed report of the activities carried out. The selected projects will subsequently be evaluated by a jury of experts specially appointed by the Center by executive decree.

The winning projects will be announced during the week of Libriamoci 2024 and announced on the page of the Center for books and reading www.cepell.it/it/, on the website www.ilmaggiodeilibri.cepell.it dedicated to the campaign, and on the various channels social networks linked to the event and will be awarded in Rome in December, on the occasion of the national fair for small and medium publishing. Each winner of the first four categories (Libraries, Cultural Associations, Schools, Prisons, healthcare facilities and facilities for the elderly) will be awarded a prize in book vouchers (chosen by the winners) worth 2,000 euros to be spent at the winning bookshop , which will cover the shipping costs of the books purchased by the winners. The bookstore that won the Maggio dei Libri Award will also be responsible for providing books to the winners of the “BookTuberPrize 2024” prize announced by the Centre. Smaller prizes may also be available for the non-winners mentioned.
