“Stop hypocrisy, US votes for UN for Palestinian state”

‘Palestine Israel. The long deception. The essential solution’. Already in the title of his new book, Mario Capanna, former leader of the student movement in ’68, then a member of the European Parliament and MP several times, makes it clear how he thinks (or continues to think). His volume, which comes out today, co-written with Luciano Neri (Mimesis, 278 pp.) arrives on the shelves on the day of Israel’s response to Iran, in a scenario that risks going out of control throughout the Middle Eastern region .

“The vast majority of world public opinion – he says when asked by AdnKronos – is finally understanding that without the creation of the independent Palestinian state, which coexists in peace with that of Israel, the war will last indefinitely, as unfortunately the reality is demonstrating”. And “the attack by Hamas on 7 October, even at the cost of blood, meant that the Palestinian question, which had by now fallen into universal oblivion, has returned to the attention of world public opinion”, claims the former leader of the 1968 movement.

Now, having acknowledged this centrality, of the underlying problem, for Capanna the point remains the same as always: creating the Palestinian state. Where the ‘essential solution’ – returning to the title – remains that of ‘two peoples, two States’. Slogan that is on everyone’s lips today: “It’s true – he acknowledges – everyone says it now, chancelleries all over the world support it, but there remains a fundamental hypocrisy, because although it is a positive factor, talking about it is not enough, because words cost nothing.”

The former secretary of Proletarian Democracy, as he explains in the volume that he will present to the Chamber of Deputies on Monday, then asks himself the question of ‘What to do?’ made famous by Lenin at the beginning of the 20th century, looking for “real solutions that can really have an impact, beyond words”. “The hypocrisy of the West must end – he asks – starting from the United States and Europe. If we really want to give life to the Palestinian state, it is simply enough for the United States to convene the UN Security Council and propose a motion for the Constitution of the Palestinian State”, a motion that “would pass unanimously, immediately, and would change the fate of the conflict. This is the decisive point”.
