Nardi wins on the Roman night: he beat Altmaier in two sets. Lajovic beats Sonego on the Central of the Internazionali d’Italia

Luca Nardi ITA, 2003.08.06

Luca Nardiborn in 2003, won a splendid victory on the night of the Foro Italico in Rome, defeating the German Daniel Altmaier with a double 6-4. Thanks to this success, the young Italian tennis player earned the challenge against his Danish peer Holger Runein a meeting that promises to be fun and exciting.
Although Altmaier fielded 79% of first serve points compared to Nardi’s 66%, it was the Italian who made the difference with 75% of first serve points won. This allowed him to get 30 points out of 40, which was decisive for his victory. Furthermore, Nardi finished with a win-free ratio of 24-27, significantly higher than the German’s 6-23.

Despite the change of court from the Grandstand to Pietrangeli just before 11pm, Nardi immediately started strong, hitting the break to zero in the first game. However, his spectacular play showed some uncertainty, allowing Altmaier to immediately recover the break. The Italian, however, was able to regain the advantage in the ninth game thanks to a backhand down the line, thus setting the break and closing the first set 6-4 after canceling a delicate break point in the last game of the set.

The second set saw more fight, with Nardi saving two consecutive break points in the second game thanks to his serve. Altmaier’s errors allowed the Italian to move ahead again by a break, but the German managed to restore parity. The balance lasted until 4-4, when Nardi found the perfect combination between spectacle and concreteness, gaining the decisive advantage and sealing the victory with a valuable short ball, taking home the set and match 6 to 4.
Now, Luca Nardi is preparing to face Holger Rune in a match that promises sparks between two young talents.

Lorenzo Sonego fails to complete the comeback against Dusan Lajovic in the first round of the Italian Internationals. The Serbian won with a score of 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 after two and a half hours of play, securing a place in the second round where he will face the number 17 seed, Baez.
The match starts with Lajovic dominating the first set, leaving Sonego few chances.
However, in the second set, the Serbian dropped his intensity, allowing the Turin player to get back into the match after the Italian recovered a 1-3 deficit (impacting on 3-all and also canceling numerous break points). Lorenzo manages to drag Lajovic to the tie-break, where he wins by 7 points to 5, taking the match to the third and decisive set and placing an ace on the set ball.
Before the start of the third set, Lajovic requests a medical timeout, but the inertia seems to be entirely in favor of the blue. The first six games flow quickly, with both players holding their serve. In the seventh game, Lajovic saves a dangerous break point with an ace and takes the lead 4-3.
Right at 4-3, Sonego’s unexpected missed pass arrives, losing the serve at 15 and giving the Serbian the chance to serve for the match. Lajovic does not tremble and closes the match, earning access to the second round.
For Lorenzo Sonego it is a disappointment, considering the expectations and support of the Centrale public. The Turin native could now see himself again on the Challenger circuit to collect precious points in view of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He is likely to be present in Turin next week in the Challenger 175 tournament.
