Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Aldo Moro. This is the message of the mayor Giovanna Bruno.
«May 9th is a sad date for our country. It is the day democracy receives a mortal blow, a blow that will mark its history forever. Forty-six years ago, on May 9, the Red Brigades killed Aldo Moro, after 55 days of imprisonment. His body, found by the police around 1.30pm in the trunk of a red Renault 4 in via Caetani, halfway between the DC and PCI headquarters, was the surrender of democracy into the hands of terrorists. Yet May 9th also marks another important date, which in some way involves Aldo Moro it is intimately linked. Europe Day, born in 1950 on the eve of a possible third world war, occurs on May 9th. And among its fundamental principles there is the essential one of Peace. And here the memory of Aldo Moro becomes immediate.
Moro pro-European, many support him. He thought of a strong, democratic and representative Europe, “a union open to international collaboration” and with this vision he contributed to the reform which in 1979 led to the first election of the European Parliament by universal suffrage. But he was unable to see it, because the terrorist exasperation of the political ideals of those years interrupted a path of democratic growth in the country. And all of Europe. But that process has started again, with those ideas on the legs of all of us who every day commit ourselves to the ideals of a policy of peace, service and the common good.
Those values for which Peppino Impastato, as a young Sicilian involved in the social and political life of his country, paid personally. And on May 9, 1978 his life was interrupted by a serious mafia attack.”
