AIELLI (AQ9 – The now usual and eagerly awaited May event with the Sirente Bike Marathon, which will be held on Sunday 19 May in Aielli, reaches its eighth edition.
The diligent organizers of the Avezzano Mtb and the Alpini Aielli Group have arranged everything in the best possible way so that the participants can find a cliché worthy of the importance of the event itself.
The Sirente Bike Marathon is a gratifying success every year thanks to the two routes that whet the legs of both the fittest and the less fit, both with the 71 kilometer marathon and the 34 kilometer point to point.
This year the Marathon once again awards the FCI Abruzzo regional champion titles only for the open and amateur categories. With a total difference in altitude of 1,800 metres, the departure is from Aielli and with a slight descent you reach the lowest point of the race (943 meters above sea level) in the Fonte della Madonna area. Here the dirt road begins to climb steeply and the longest climb begins up to Fonte Caperno passing through the Vado Castello pass.
You also pass through the towns of Valle Arzano and Fonte Monacesca until reaching the highest point in the heart of Mount Sirente (Fonte Caperno) at an altitude of 1868 meters above sea level. A slight slope begins and then turning left you face a descent that reaches the Prati del Popolo where you can admire the panorama of Ovindoli. Turn right and from this point a descent begins that leads to Val d’Arano-Ovindoli. Continue on level ground up to Rovere and Rocca di Mezzo with a series of ups and downs with a view of the splendid rock walls of Sirente. From the Anatella and Canala sources, you cross the road that goes up from Gagliano Aterno to reach the Baullo plain, and then dives back into the Fucino basin passing through the Scafelle Valley. The transit through Collarmele anticipates the last uphill effort to reach the finish line in Aielli.
