Udine – After the resignation of the Director of the Emergency Department of the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Udine a few months ago, the resignation of his acting colleague also followed in recent days.

AAROI-EMAC (Association of Italian Hospital Anesthetists and Resuscitators – Critical Area Emergency) issued a statement to denounce a situation defined as “unsustainable”. Here’s what he writes in the AAROI-EMAC note.

The note from the emerging anesthetists and resuscitators union

“For more than a year, the emergency workers of this region, the scientific societies and the AAROI-EMAC union had heavily denounced the dramatic worsening situation of the ASUFC emergency rooms and warned the administration and the Department of the possible risk of collapse of the largest PS in the Region, that of Udine”.

“After 5 years of completely wrong and unsuccessful strategic choices – continue the anesthesiologists – of no planning, of no investment-loyalty in employees, of no involvement of Departments and Universities, of many useless words and false promises and with the only wicked , short-sighted, degrading objective of savagely privatizing all the PS of ASUFC including that of Udine, a crucial, strategic PS with an indisputable past history, after the sudden resignation of the Director of the PS a few months ago, now also comes the resignation of the acting colleague functions, resignations which are not at all unexpected and absolutely acceptable which highlight the unsustainability of this aberrant situation”.

“Backbreaking shifts – denounces the union – due to the lack of management of company flows, more than half of the medical workforce having been fired in the last year, remaining staff absolutely insufficient for the volumes of activity and increasingly less valued and loyal, entry of cooperatives and token operators completely decontextualized from reality corporate, uncontrolled and without any verification of qualifications and abilities, consequent inevitable loss of quality of the clinical setting, delays, reports, complaints and warranty notices, operators in burn out, high rate of stress-related absences, are now inducing even the latest doctors heroic ones left, yet another victims of a system in total disarray, to leave ASUFC.”

The union expresses “maximum solidarity with the colleague who resigned, maximum solidarity and total support for the colleagues who resist and we request the immediate resignation of those who are the cause of this umpteenth failed result and of those who continue to mystify reality, ignore workers and union representatives and maliciously underestimate these critical issues.”

“Let’s see – reiterate the doctors’ representatives – if even in the face of this very dangerous situation, which sees the largest emergency room in the region without a guide, without a serious project and without any short-term planning, let’s see if the only solution that will be proposed and flaunted by the Region will once again be to privatize even the little that remains of the professionalism and quality of the public system or whether the solution will even be to close some small hospitals and/or some duplication of departments that this regional government has in these maintained and nourished for years, because electoral basins and points of power, and which today AGENAS, lavishly paid to scrutinize their own actions, will certainly indicate to close”.

“On the one hand, the President of the Region rightly rejoices in the Regions Conference for having decreed a stop to token operators and cooperatives, an excellent national result, on the other, his Health Councilor continues to tear our FVG regional healthcare system to pieces by giving it away to private individuals – denounces the union. – Yesterday the blood sampling centers and laboratories, today the Emergency Rooms, tomorrow the Radiology while the Regional Council continues to hide the truth of things and give unreal and inflated numbers as it already did with the Intensive Care beds in its time.

“And in the meantime – concludes AAROI-EMAC – even the Argentine doctors, victims of ‘legalised’ healthcare gangmastering which is ignored by the Region, abandon the SSR FVG, denouncing employers and companies, heading for other regions where instead a serious and regular campaign of direct hiring, also regularizes foreign colleagues, their activities, their contracts and their salaries, without wasting public money”.
