Late this morning (Sunday 28 April) a moment of tension occurred in the canal port of Rimini when a car fell into the sea. The alarm was raised around 12.40pm in Via Sinistra del Porto, near the Guardia di Finanza docks, when the vehicle passed the protections and sank. Initially it was thought that there was a man with two children inside the car, but the rescue operations confirmed that the only occupant was a 53-year-old man from Rimini, whose gesture seems to indicate suicide according to the first investigations by the police.

The firefighters, the Fiamme Gialle divers and the police intervened on site to attempt recovery. A 42-year-old Egyptian man also jumped into the water to help, risking his life. Recovery operations are still ongoing.

Update: “Leave me where I am,” he said while his car was sinking into the waters of the canal port of Rimini, to a fisherman who had dived in to try to save him. The sailor, Hazem Zakzuk, a 42-year-old Egyptian, jumped in and while the car was sinking he somehow managed to break the window on the driver’s side, grabbing the driver, who however resisted, telling him to desist. At that point the 42-year-old was no longer successful in his aim and had to go back up for air to avoid the risk of drowning. Back on the surface, he was helped by other compatriots who in the meantime had alerted the police.

The body was recovered while waiting for the medical examiner and the car was hoisted onto the dock.
