At Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports it will be possible to consume products from the Too good to go brand, a social impact company that sells surplus food at reduced prices. The agreement with Aeroporti di Roma – a Mundys group company – was born with the idea of raising passengers’ awareness of the fight against food waste.
How the agreement works
The recovered food products can be found in 32 points of sale located in the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fumicino and Giovan Battista Pastine in Ciampino. Passengers departing from these airports will be able to purchase “Surprise bags”, i.e. boxes with food selected by individual merchants from the products of the day. The bags will be sold in Autogrill, Chef Express, Lagardère Travel Retail Italia, MyChef and Venchi outlets. «This agreement – says the Chief Commercial Officer of Aeroporti di Roma Marilena Blasi – aims to be a further sign of care towards an airport community which sees the airport as its home and which from today will have an additional opportunity to contribute to the protection of the environment”.
The numbers of food waste
According to the report Waste and hunger of the Divulga Study Center, 8.65 million tons of food are lost every year in Italy. According to the 2024 report from the Waste Watcher Observatory, on average 566.3 grams of food products are thrown away in every Italian home per week. According to the forecasts of Adr and Too good to go, selling the products in airport areas will allow 12 thousand meals to be saved. For the two partner companies, this operation will avoid the emission of over 32 tons of CO2 by the end of 2024, and will allow them to save 9 million liters of water and 33 thousand square meters of land that would have been used for the production of the recovered food. «We strive every day to ensure that food waste becomes a good habit for everyone and wherever they are – declares the director of Too good to go Italia Mirco Cerisola – For this reason we are happy to be able to offer the possibility of saving food that is still good even for all those who are preparing to travel leaving from the airports of Rome”.
