A shipwreck more than 3,000 years old, with its cargo perfectly preserved, has been discovered off the northern coast of Israel, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Thursday. The extraordinary discovery was made on the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea, more than a kilometer and a half deep.
This is all thanks to the energy company Energean, listed in London and operating in Israel.
During their investigation, the company identified the ship’s cargo: hundreds of amphorae, ancient two-handled jugs used to transport goods such as wine or olive oil during the Bronze Age.”The ship appears to have sunk in distress, either due to a storm or an attempted pirate attack, common events in the Late Bronze Age.” said Jacob Sharvit, head of the marine unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority.
The wreck, discovered last year 90 kilometers off the northern coast of Israel, dates back to the 14th or 13th century BC and belongs to an era when the maritime trade was experiencing significant expansion. During their investigation, Energean’s team found a large pile of amphorae piled up on the seabed, said Karnit Bahartan, the company’s environmental manager. “When we sent the images to the antiquities authority, it turned out to be a sensational discovery, far beyond our expectations.” this is exactly what happened.
Jacob Sharvit stressed that the location of the find, far from the coast, proves that ancient sailors were capable of navigating without a visible coastlineprobably orienting itself with the stars and the sun.”This is a world-class discovery that changes history.” Sharvit said.
Energean has conducted an operation to recover some of the storage vessels, which will soon be presented to the public, the authority announced.
