Since Thursday, southern China has been affected by rains that have become alluvial, bringing forward the start of the heavy rain season by at least a month. Particularly affected is the province of Guangdong, where they also had tornadoes and large hailstorms. It hasn’t rained so heavily for more than sixty years and the floods extend from Hong Kong’s hinterland northwards for at least 200km. Several towns along the Pearl River were submerged under water, with rescuers forced to evacuate residents in rubber dinghies. Some waterways in Guangdong province have seen their flow increase up to seven metres, submerging agricultural fields, homes and businesses.
There is no news of victims, but there are at least eleven people missing. Dozens of houses collapsed, others were seriously damaged. Some villages were overwhelmed by landslides and rescuers, aided by the Chinese army, had to reach isolated locations on foot or with the aid of helicopters. With the start of the new week the rains have temporarily eased in Guangdong, but Over the next few days, new storms are expected, some of them very intense which could further aggravate the already critical situation.
