Volleyball, how Italy became invincible

The best example is Coneglianowhich has the Imoco Group behind it, a Venetian company that operates in the wine bottle labels sector, and which has invested heavily in the local volleyball team, building a new arena and allowing the team to become the best in the world.

Investments are made possible by an economic context that is certainly more accessible than those of other disciplines. According to data reported by “Sport Finanza”, the total budget of the 12 Super League teams is around 60 million euros, with around 4.5 million per team, with the exception of the most successful clubs which are close to 7 million.

Even the management of the facilities does not require large sums of money: the average turnout in the last championship was 2,092 spectators per match, a figure which is still growing, but in general the arenas never have a capacity of more than 5 thousand seats.

An economic condition that facilitates the possibility of enjoying long-lasting investments.

Can volleyball be a model for other sports?

This question does not have a clear answer: from an economic point of view, the numbers suggest that volleyball is a model difficult to replicate in disciplines, such as football, with a decidedly different and greater value.

Just to get an idea, a team like the Lecceamong those with less spending capacity in the current Italian football Serie A, spends approx 67 million of euros for the maintenance of its corporate structure, i.e as much as the total budget of all teams in the main men’s volleyball league.

Certainly the economic context is different with regards to sponsors and the sale of television rights to matches, but the difference remains very important.

In fact, it should not be forgotten that, despite the great successes of high-level volleyball, the economic context of Italian volleyball is very precarious, and there are few figures, including assistants, press officers and supporting figures who, outside of the big clubs, can make volleyball their profession.

Ma he Club Italy he has to go to school

The situation related to the programming and vision of the Federation is different: the Club Italia is certainly a replicable model, because allows young players to compete in a professional context from the early years of their careerthus ensuring a more linear growth from the youth sector to the first teams; a key step that it is one of the typical problems of football.

What Italian volleyball will have to decide, as a broader movement, which goes from the Federation to the clubs, is how to exploit this glut of successes and this great moment of popularity in general in the coming years: whether to continue with this model, without taking risks, or try to take a step further by increasing one’s economic ambitions, trying to further expand one’s catchment area even outside provincial contexts.

A nice thought to work on, while Italian teams dominate the world and Volleyball stands out as one of the Italian excellences of 2025.
