The president of Volleyball 1991: «For three years we have been in three different places. I’m aiming for 2027: in Florence they built Palazzo Wanny in a year and a half”
«We will have a discussion with the members as soon as the council gives us the timeframe for the new building. It was said that it would be ready by the end of 2026, but it is now clear that there are delays. Then we will decide what to do.”
President of Volley Bergamo 1991, Andrea Veneziani has a 360 degree vision of the new sports hall issue, since the Municipality said that the old facility was no longer available. «I was quite amazed because, to revive women’s volleyball after the Foppapedretti era, we had worked so hard. The former mayor Gori himself had given us a hand. I remember that the sports councilor, Poli, said: “I warned you that you will no longer have the arena”. I found this unacceptable.”
The Municipality reassured you about the times.
«The Chorus wasn’t supposed to be what it is now, there was the idea of a competitive gym that would be built in the area, until a new building was proposed to us. They told us: we’ll hurry, you’ll have to hold out for a couple of seasons.”
So you went to Treviglio.
«Who welcomed us with open arms, even if for us, moving from Bergamo remains a significant logistical problem. From a sporting point of view, we experience completely different situations, because if before we trained and played in the same facility, now for 3 years we have been in three different places, between Celadina where the facility is beautiful, Treviglio and the Chorus. One more complication. We have to move all the surrounding equipment and when playing at Chorus the parquet must also be assembled with logistical implications. A delicate operation that I personally follow from 5 in the morning on race day. It’s very nice to play against them, even if we are at ease in Treviglio, Bergamo is the top.”
Satisfactions but also greater costs.
«At the Chorus we played one match last year and five this season, the last of which will be next Sunday. The cost/income break-even point is set at 3 thousand spectators, with these box office numbers we repay ourselves. In two matches we had 5 thousand spectators and in the other 2 we exceeded 3 thousand.”
As a practical man, do you see a goal for the new structure?
«I hope, with great tranquility, that the administration will give us an indication of the new times so that we can plan and decide. Until today we have had informal meetings, because we did not see the work starting. This summer I passed the former Palacreberg and saw some containers positioned there, but I understand that everything is at a standstill. We were told that there were problems, but that they would be made up for later.”
And now?
«Since early December we haven’t heard from anyone, also because we are busy in the field every three days. I’m aiming for 2027: in Florence they built Palazzo Wanny in a year and a half. It is a structure that is very similar to the one that is intended to be built in Bergamo, which I don’t like, because the beauty of a sports hall is having the public all around. However, we had been told by the offices that the architecture could not be changed, especially since there was a great rush to complete it. We try to carry on the glorious history of Bergamo volleyball and we are proud to be the Bergamo team, but now we hope to have certain and no longer unclear dates. Resisting any longer than that would be too tiring.”
