Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Iceland will not take part in the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. And a few days ago a petition was launched for prevent Italy’s participation in the event which will be held in Vienna in May 2026, despite Rai having already confirmed the presence of our country.
The acronym USB – Rai coordination (it was founded two years ago and today has around fifty members) has started collecting signatures, taking a clear position. The goal? Join the other countries that dissociated themselves after the confirmation of Israel’s participation by the EBU. The appeal, in this sense, is addressed to Viale Mazzini.
“By withdrawing Italy from Eurovision and deciding not to broadcast the event, Rai would not only be taking an ethically and empathetically justifiable position, but would also be providing an example of a moral leader on the international scene.”, we read in the note reported by the editorial staff of Euronews.
And again: “A gesture of this type, he continues, would demonstrate how much Italy cares about the values of human dignity, equality and justice for all peoples. We would make our voice resonate globally, demonstrating that we do not turn a blind eye to injusticeIn the coming weeks we will try to exceed the threshold of three thousand signatures collectedtrying to involve prominent figures who can give greater resonance to the petition, as Claudio Ciccone of Usb – Rai coordination explains.
“We had already expressed the need for Italy to withdraw from Eurovision if Israel confirmed its participation on 22 September last when there was a large street demonstration. We said that this was our intention, that is, to ensure that Rai withdraws if Israel participates.”, he declared and hopes that Italy can follow Spain’s exampleone of the Big Five (along with France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom) that will opt out.
The young acronym, underlines Ciccone, will try to put pressure on the Rai board of directors “to withdraw its delegation from the Eurovision Song Contest“. In addition to collecting signatures, a demonstration is planned in front of the RAI headquarters to request a meeting. As we have already mentioned in the previous paragraphs, the broadcaster has already confirmed Italy’s participation, last December 5th.
“As a member of the Big Five, Italy has always been among the countries that have believed and invested in the Eurovision Song Contest, contributing significantly, including economically, to its development and international success”, reads the official statement. “The event represents the longest running international musical event, capable of uniting different cultures in a common celebration. Rai’s commitment within the competition is confirmation of its desire to strengthen Italy’s role in the promotion of music, culture and entertainment at an international level”.
Meanwhile, while Portugal’s participation is also at risk, we wait to find out who will eventually represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest. However, we will have to wait for the 76th Sanremo Festival to end – for Sanremo 2026 the rules will change, whoever wins will no longer automatically go to Eurovision.
