The history of Italian tennis has just been written by Jannik Sinner. The blue tennis player achieved the overtaking of Novak Djokovic, becoming number 1 in the world ranking. A historic achievement for Italian tennis, it had never happened in history and now Jannik has achieved it who, among other things, also beat Dimitrov in the quarterfinals of Roland-Garros, reaching the semi-final of the Parisian Grand Slam where he will face one of Alcaraz or Tsitsipas .
Sinner’s words after overtaking Djokovic
«I’m very happy. Happy to have this number in the rankings, There’s a lot of work behind it. In two days there is an important match, the semi-finals of Roland Garros, I’m very focused on this, but I’m happy”: Thus the South Tyrolean in a press conference in Paris at the end of the match against Dimitrov.
«First Italian number 1 in history? I think it’s a great thing for Italy. I am happy to be part of this Italian movement. People are playing tennis more and more…». Before the semi-final you have «two days off, which we will use for rest but also for training. It will be difficult but I can’t wait. These are the matches I train for.”
«It’s very important to remain the boy I am. And that’s one thing I can control. A success cannot change who I am. In the end – continued Sinner – it’s just a number, it ends there, but behind tennis there is a normal life. And I’m a normal boy, I sometimes like to go go-karting, do normal things with the people I love.” «Now I’m No. 1 and I hope to remain so for a while. But if I don’t succeed then I’ll be No. 2, No. 3, I don’t put the pressure on myself of always having to win.”
Compliments from Giorgia Meloni
Even the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Sinne on the achievement, publishing a tweet on X: «First Italian in history to reach the top of the world rankings. Congratulations Champion!»
Among others, the president of CONI also complimented the Italian Giovanni Malagò: «In the immensity. Where there is only room for number ones. From today Sinner is the beauty of dominating the world from top to bottom, the first Italian ever in tennis to climb up there. Thanks to talent, sacrifices, application and humility. The secrets that allowed him to write and rewrite history, without borders, without limits, without fear. You will continue to make us daydream about new, unforgettable pages of history. Proud of you, Jannik. Forever a symbol of the universal excellence of Italian sport».
