CALTAGIRONE (CATANIA) – A head-on collision, which occurred shortly after 8 this morning along Provincial Road 34 in the Caltagirone area, caused one death and the injury of a young woman who was taken to hospital for treatment. The news is fragmentary but what is certain is that the victim is a 79 year old man, Francesco Russo. The Carabinieri of the Caltagirone Company were brought to the scene together with the 118 rescuers and the firefighters.
The victim was pulled from the wreckage
The firefighters themselves had to free and extract the man, now lifeless, from the sheet metal of the car. The young woman involved in the accident, however, was fortunately not in danger of dying and was transported to hospital in Caltagirone. According to a very first and summary reconstruction of the facts, the 79-year-old may have suffered an illness while driving.
Air ambulance on site
The air ambulance also arrived on site who had been alerted given the man’s serious condition. An extreme rescue attempt which, however, did not save his life.
The impact between the two cars, a Nissan station wagon (driven by the victim) and a Peugeot (driven by the young woman), was violent: traffic was blocked for several hours also to allow the necessary investigations to be acquired to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the accident.
