NASA and SpaceX plan to destroy the International Space Station

NASA recently awarded SpaceX a contract worth $843 million for the development of a US Deorbit Vehiclewith the goal of guiding the aging International Space Station (ISS) through Earth’s atmosphere for safe and controlled reentry into the Pacific Ocean by 2030.

The ISS, a symbol of international cooperation in space, was continuously occupied for over 23 years and represents a flying laboratory the size of a football field. Currently, only the ISS and China’s Tiangong Space Station are operational in low Earth orbit.

NASA plans to use the Disorbit Vehicledeveloped by SpaceX, to guide the ISS to a safe position for controlled descent in about six years, ensuring it avoids populated areas during reentry of its 430,000 kg of structure. NASA will own and operate the deorbiter spacecraft being developed by SpaceX for the critical mission of deorbiting the ISS. Parts of the ISS could survive reentry, and NASA plans to steer them toward Point Nemo in the Pacific Ocean, far from the mainland.

A Florida family is suing NASA for $80,000 in damages after a piece of space debris, believed to be discarded batteries from the ISS, fell on their Naples home, destroying two floors on March 8NASA has confirmed that the object was part of discarded cargo expected to be consumed upon reentry and has six months to respond to the cause.

The United States, Japan, Canada and ESA contributing nations have committed to operating the ISS until 2030, with Russia committing until at least 2028. NASA has detected defects and failing parts in the aging ISS, with maintenance costs already equal to 4 billion dollars per yearand does not plan to reuse or preserve the entire station.

NASA plans to build a permanent base on the Moon for long-duration missions. It also supports the development of commercial space stations to maintain a U.S. presence in low-Earth orbit, with four U.S. companies planning to launch their own space laboratories, and the European Space Agency and others helping to build Starlab.
