Ski instructor died after ankle surgery, family: “Do not close the investigation”

“Do not close the investigation into our daughter’s death.” It is the appeal of the family members of Janira Melléthe ski instructor from La Thuile, in the Aosta Valley, who died at the age of 25 on 8 June from bacterial meningitis.

Mellè had fractured her ankle following an accidental fall from her bicycle during a holiday in Sicily, upon returning to Piedmont she underwent surgery Fornaca clinic in Turin. She was then discharged, she felt ill while she was returning to La Thuille from Turin, she was urgently admitted to the hospital in Aosta: a few hours after entering the intensive care unit the doctors declared her death due to meningitis bacterial.

“The only event reasonably correlated to death – writes the medical examiner Roberto Testi in the autopsy report – is the spinal anesthesia performed at Fornaca”.

The prosecutors, after a search at Fornaca, entered the anesthetist and the Fornaca nurse present in the operating room during the operation in the register of suspects, but a request for dismissal is pending on the file.

A hypothesis which the family firmly opposed, asking instead to investigate the possible responsibilities of the health director. The investigating judge reserved time to decide.
