Twenty One Pilots, Clancy is the end of a ten-year saga

The new album by Twenty One Pilots he was invoked with the same eagerness with which one awaits the end of a saga literary or cinematographic. After following the exploits of hero Clancy across three different concept albums, fans will finally know the conclusion of this ambitious musical narrative, which has lasted almost a decade. The duo formed by Tyler Joseph And Josh Dun began singing this fictional story in 2015, in Blurryfacetheir most successful album, and then continued the story of the saga in the following two albums: Trenchfrom 2018, e Scaled and Icy (whose anagram is Clancy is dead), from 2021. Nine years after the first chapter the final episode arrives, Clancythe Ohio band’s seventh album.

«I am a citizen, I am an escapee, I am an exception. I’m Clancy”: in video trailers, released by the band before the album’s release, features Tyler Joseph playing Clancy, the fictional hero of the Trench saga. Four minutes of video in which his voice does a sort of summary of previous episodes. A way to rediscover the thread of the plot (perhaps a little too complicated) that has accompanied the band’s musical production since 2015. A “look back to see how we got here”, in which the events set in the dystopian city of Demain the imaginary world of Trench, from which Clancy escaped and where he now plans to return, to defeat his enemy, Nico, also known as Blurryface. A metaphorical journey among Joseph’s demonsauthor of the lyrics, in which themes dear to Twenty One Pilots are addressed: the fight againstanxietyL’insecurity and the depression. «This haze around my face makes me feel all alone/This haze around my face makes me feel alone».

Produced by Joseph and the producer Paul Meany (who has been working on the band’s sound since Trench and who is now almost a third member of the band), Clancy has the classic heterogeneity of a Twenty Pilots album: the thirteen tracks alternate different genres, to which Joseph’s vocal register adapts. From the crossover (in Prodigy style) by Overcompensatewhich opens the album, to the radio-friendly pop of Routines In the Night. Passing through the post-punk/indie of Next Semester and for the vocal-ukulele ballad of The Craving (Jenna’s Version). Special mention for the synth bass and the rhythmic interweaving of Cartoonsfor the sensational shot of Navigating (the real single of the album) and for the modest and nostalgic Snap Back: «Got a bad feeling that I’m about to break».

To celebrate the end of the Trench saga, Twenty One Pilots will leave for The Clancy World Tour: over sixty dates around the world for what promises to be the most important tour of their career. They will depart on August 15 from Denver, Colorado, and then cross the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South America. From April 2025 they will also land in Europe.
