Mallorca, cocktail bar terrace collapses: at least 4 dead and 27 injured

Rome, 23 May. (askanews) – Four people died and at least 27 were injured after the glass terrace of a cocktail bar located on the first floor of a building in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, collapsed. The first floor collapsed onto the ground floor and, due to the weight and impact, also collapsed onto the basement of the building. The collapse – reports the newspaper El Pais – left several customers of the restaurant trapped, sources from the Local Police of Palma confirmed.

At 11pm local time the emergency services and firefighters were planning the first excavations to try to locate the living people under the rubble. The Palma firefighters and the national and local police are helped by a drone flying over the area. The local police asked passers-by and onlookers remaining on the sand of the beach to maintain the strictest silence so that the rescue teams can hear the voices of possible survivors. Sources from the Local Police of Palma who are participating in the rescue have assured that they fear an increase of the number of victims. Shortly before 10pm they managed to save a young man with a broken arm who had been trapped after the collapse but inside a cavity, news welcomed with joy by the numerous relatives of those affected who had gone to the area.
