A girl of just 19 years of age, of Apulian origins, and a “traveller” in the Vicenza area, was arrested yesterday, May 14, by the Schio police after having pulled off the classic scam of a fake road accident. Victim, a sixty-year-old woman from Scledo.
What had already turned into a jewel theft was foiled by a carabiniere on leave, her neighbour, who stopped the scoundrel on the landing and called 112, allowing a patrol from the mobile radio operations unit to take her over immediately. .
The sixty-year-old, targeted with a complex scam, found herself under the crossfire of a double phone call for a handful of minutes, which put her in a state of anxiety and prostration, so much so that she handed over her belongings to the member of the band who rang his doorbell.
It all started with a phone call on the landline: “I’m a policeman, your son caused an accident: he hit an eight-year-old child.” The woman, shocked by the news, insistently asked the fake soldier to speak to her son, whose screams they even pretended to hear in the distance, but the conversation always continued with the same interlocutor who continued with the his “act”, insisting: “She will be contacted immediately by a lawyer because her son must be tried immediately.” At the same time, while the woman was still on the phone with the fake policeman, she received a second phone call, this time on her mobile number, from a man who, introducing himself as a lawyer, asked her, to cover the legal costs, to find all the gold objects she had at home: “An assistant to the judge will come by soon to collect them” the second scammer told her.
And in fact, shortly afterwards, a young woman showed up at the victim’s house and, after having qualified herself, took possession of the jewels that the woman had placed on the table. Before walking away, however, the sixty-year-old, having realized her scam, started screaming and managed to recover the objects that the scammer had already placed in her bag in the meantime. The woman’s screams were heard by her neighbour, a carabiniere on leave, who alerted his former colleagues by calling the emergency number 112 and blocked the young woman in the stairwell, then handed her over to the Carabinieri who promptly intervened.
The 19-year-old arrested had various police records for crimes against property: after the formalities she was held in the security room of the barracks, in
disposition of the Judicial Authority, pending immediate proceedings. The judge validated the arrest (for the crime of residential burglary) and applied the precautionary measure of the obligation to stay at the residence in Puglia.
