Comment on the Gospel of the day, 28 April 2024 –

It is beautiful to see how Jesus always finds the simplest and most practical way to make himself understood by his disciples. Here he does it with the image of the vine and the branches. Pruning is an important and fundamental practice for the health of the plant so that it can continue to guarantee the production of good fruit, with the right sugar level. And the people knew this well.

But what does Jesus want to convey to us? It’s the Relationship. Staying together with someone implies that first there is a deep and cared for relationship. “Being” and “playing to the core” allow us to enter into a relationship with each other. The relationship with Jesus falls exactly into these patterns. How good and full do we feel in a relationship like this? And Jesus explains to us why. In this relationship there is a passage of lifeblood which from Him, who is life, passes to us to bear fruit. Just like the vine.

It is not the stem of the vine that bears fruit, but its branches. Just as the stem is fundamental for its shoots, for the sap, the shoots are also fundamental for the stem, for its fruits.
In this relationship there are therefore two people and it is not one-way, like a one-way street.
In this relationship there is everything each of us needs and Jesus knows it. The fruits that are asked of us develop over time, with the right care of the relationship with Him, by trusting and entrusting ourselves.

Let us therefore ask the Lord for that Sap that nourishes us to bear good fruit, with the right sugar level.
