Do you want to play GTA in chronological order? Here’s the full timeline

IGN has published an in-depth analysis for those who want play GTA episodes in chronological orderreporting the complete timeline of the Rockstar Games series when the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is just under a year away.

The franchise currently consists of sixteen games and expansionswhich however in reality are intertwined within the scope of three different timelines which the development team declared independent of each other: the 2D timeline, the 3D timeline and the HD timeline.

As you know, the saga began in 1997 with two two-dimensional episodes and as many expansionsLondon 1961 and London 1969, which established some aspects that Rockstar Games would maintain over time, from the irreverent tone to the degree of freedom guaranteed by an open structure.

Why doesn’t Rockstar make anything other than GTA and Red Dead Redemption? A former developer explains

However, it was with the advent of the 3D timeline, inaugurated in 2000 by the release of GTA 3, that the franchise managed to change the gaming industry foreverintroducing mechanics and solutions that were then taken up by countless other productions, although rarely with comparable success.

The complete timeline

The HD timeline is of course the most mature, coherent and ambitiousboth on a technical and narrative level, as demonstrated by the engaging stories and social criticism of GTA IV and the expansions The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. GTA Tokyo was also about to be added to the list, however.
