Rockstar Games is known today for two sagas: Grand Theft Auto e Red Dead Redemption. It’s no longer a company that produces new IP, like Max Payne, LA Noire and Midnight Club (through external teams, too).
Why don’t you try something new? The answer comes from a ex Rockstar, il technical director Obbe Vermeij.
What Vermeij said about Rockstar Games games
Speaking to GameHub, Vermeij explained that “the truth is, if you have a studio that has a hugely successful game, there is no point in making dramatic changes. Whatever weird ideas you have, you should put them into GTA rather than make a completely new game.”
GameHub gives the example of Rockstar Games games such as Agent (a James Bond-style adventure set during the Cold War) and a Zombie-themed title set on a Scottish island which never saw the light. Vermeij then said that he doesn’t regret putting them aside to work on GTA.
GTA Tokyo was real and almost developed, but it wasn’t a Rockstar Games project
“In hindsight, I don’t think they missed an opportunity by not working on itneither with the zombie game nor with other experiments like Agent. They wouldn’t have been as good as GTA. It would have been a waste of time and a distraction.”
That said, Vermeij has great respect for development teams that put aside what has brought them success for something new, as done by Larian Studios who decided to move to Divinity instead of working on Baldur’s Gate 4. “Good for them, but it’s a bold move. It’s not something to take for granted. It’s very risky. It’s easier to keep doing what you’re already doing.”
In this regard, did you know that Baldur’s Gate 3 was limited by the graphics engine? For Divinity, Larian is creating a new one.
