A major security incident has hit Ubisoft, with immediate consequences for Rainbow Six Siege, one of its most popular multiplayer titles.
Over the weekend, a group of hackers managed to enter the game’s internal systems, thus gaining the ability to directly intervene in moderation, the virtual economy and player accounts globally.
According to numerous reports that appeared online and confirmed by screenshots shared by users, attackers were able to ban users at will and, above all, distribute enormous quantities of virtual currency. In just a few hours, millions of accounts found themselves with around two billion R6 Credits and Renown each, as well as the full unlock of every cosmetic item in the game, including developer-only skins.
Considering that R6 Credits are sold for a fee in the official store, the theoretical value of the distributed currency well exceeds 13 million dollars.
The first official confirmation arrived on Saturday morning, when Rainbow Six Siege account X acknowledged the presence of an ongoing problem.
Shortly thereafter, Ubisoft decided to deliberately shut down the game’s servers and internal store to contain the incident and allow technical teams to intervene.
In a later update, the company clarified that players would not be punished for spending the currency received, but that all transactions made after 11am on the same day would be canceled via a rollback.
Furthermore, Ubisoft clarified that the messages appearing in the ban ticker did not come from its official systems and that that function had already been deactivated previously.
Servers reopened, but the shop remains closed
Ubisoft subsequently reopened the servers and therefore Rainbow Six Siege is playable again. The shop however remains closed “until further notice whilst investigations continue”.
“Our live testing is now complete and we are opening the game to all players. Please note that there may be a queue when connecting, as our services are increasing,” Ubisoft specified on X.”The rollback is also complete.”
Players who did not log in between December 27 at 10.49am and December 29 should see no changes to their inventory.
Ubisoft added that investigations and fixes will continue over the next two weeks.
