Why referee Doveri didn’t award the penalty after Paleari overwhelmed Idrissi in Turin-Cagliari

An episode that will cause much discussion occurred in the first minutes of Torino-Cagliari. On Field Review for lreferee Daniele Doveri about the episode Paleari-Idrissi but the referee does not award the penalty kick.

In the 8th minute of the match, Alberto Paleari intervened on Idrissi, who was launched towards the goal on the edge of the area: the Granata goalkeeper overwhelmed the Cagliari winger but, before bringing him down, he touched the ball with his right hand.

At first Doveri had stopped the game for an offside position. The VAR check then confirmed the regularity of the action, prompting the referee to review the episode on the monitor to evaluate the possible penalty.

Kolarov is furious with the referees after the penalty revoked against Inter in the Super Cup: “You are poor”

At the end of the On Field Review, the race director explained: “Following a review, the Cagliari player is not offside, but the Torino goalkeeper saves the ball and does not commit any foul. Final decision: throw-in from me.”

As a result, the referee revoked the previous offside warning and restarted play with a throw-in. A somewhat questionable choice, given that the player of the Sardinian team was launched towards the goal and after the impact with the opponent he had the possibility of recovering the ball to hit the net.

Infinite VAR and a controversial decision: Paleari brings down Idrissi, no penalty for Cagliari

An immediate start in Turin-Cagliari, with a slow-motion episode that kept the match at a standstill for several minutes. After a long VAR check, referee Daniele Doveri chose not to award the penalty kick to the rossoblù.

It all started in the 8th minute, when Idrissi was thrown deep into the left lane and burned Pedersen at speed. The Cagliari winger appears in front of Paleari, who comes out in good time: the Granata goalkeeper repels the ball with his right hand, but immediately afterwards there is contact between the two, with Idrissi ending up on the ground in the area.

Cagliari’s protests are immediate and the action is analyzed at length. The VAR calls Doveri back to the on field review to evaluate both the attacker’s position and the dynamics of the goalkeeper’s intervention. After reviewing the images, the match director clarifies: Idrissi is in a regular position, but Paleari hits the ball first and the intervention is not judged to be a foul.

Final decision: no penalty for the Sardinians and the game restarts with a throw-in, leaving inevitable controversy behind because the penalty seemed rather clear.
