The Swiss arrived on loan with the right to buy set at 15 million, but if the Nerazzurri were to win the title the obligation would come into force immediately
For Manuel Akanji the championship is worth double. The first reason is simple: to win in Italy too. So far he has raised trophies in all the countries he has played in: Switzerland, Germany, England. Cups scattered with Basel, others with Borussia Dortmund and the triplet with City. Winning in Italy would mean adding a trophy to the list of winners and also staying in Serie A. Inter took him on loan from Manchester with the right to buy set at 15 million. In the event of a scudetto, however, the option would become definitive without going through the English. It is one of the conditions linked to the formula implemented by Ausilio and Marotta in the summer.

Inter’s intention, however, is to redeem him anyway. Akanji has been impeccable so far. Six months of added Swiss army knife, a little arm and a little central, very reliable. Gazzetta del 6 split average rating (with three yellow cards), 13 appearances out of 13 as a starter in the league and all for ninety minutes. Chivu never replaced him. He remained on the bench only against Bologna in the Super Cup and Venice in the Italian Cup, playing three out of six in the Champions League from the first minute. In Serie A – among central defenders – he is fourth for passes completed every 90′ (61.6 per game), at Inter he is second for duels won (50). A certainty that he almost never gives up. Also because the Swiss, destined for his third World Cup in the summer, can play both wide and in the middle of defence. A dual role to which the Nerazzurri coach has relied on several occasions. This is why the Nerazzurri upper management are intent on redeeming him. Akanji is turning 31, but experience is on his side: “I hope to stay here – he said a month ago – let’s see what happens this season, then we’ll decide what to do with the club. Now I’m very happy in Milan”. Inter are also happy with him.
