Serie A, goodbye to the orange ball, that’s why

The Lega Serie A has officially announced the farewell to orange balloon to return to the white or yellow color again.

It was president Ezio Maria Simonelli who anticipated what will happen starting next year on all pitches in the top flight of Italian football. “We have received many legitimate protests about this, there are people who cannot see it due to color blindness”Simonelli explained to Radio Anch’io Sport on Rai Radio 1.

Orbit Hi-Visthe “fluo orange” ball chosen by Serie A for the winter season, a change usually made also in fields throughout Europe and in the rest of the world, is therefore destined to disappear approximately two months after its debut. The first use dates back to 10 November 2025, on the occasion of the 12th round of the first round, but protests immediately arose from users who were not able to clearly distinguish the new color against the green background of the turf.

The most significant difficulties emerged among people affected by color blindnesswho had immediately asked the League to take steps to resolve the problem. And this is due to the fact that, unlike other years in which a “yellow fluorescent” color was chosen, the new orange Puma footballs were indistinguishable, precisely because that kind of contrast is one of the most difficult for people suffering from dyschromatopsia.

“We have asked our supplier to bring forward the supply of new balls”continued Simonelli, admitting that it will take some time to definitively put the problem behind us. “For each match you need 25 balls, that’s 500 balls a week, plus the ones we give to the teams for training”specified the president of the Lega Serie A. “They have put into production all the new balls with a color that can be seen, but it will take some time before we can replace this orange one: not a happy choice. We will go back to yellow or white.”

“The orange ball has always been used only with snow (and only in Northern Europe) and it has always been known that on green the white and yellow colors are better distinguished… and color blind people have always existed…“, comments a user upon learning the news.

But the difficulties, as anticipated, do not exclusively concern people suffering from dyschromatopsia:“It’s not just a question of color blindness: when the ball travels fast you can’t see it anymore, you should have immediately understood that it was an absurd colour”consider another.
