It seems more and more that the exclusive are not the right path for many companies, with Microsoft and Xbox having gone multi-platform and Sony considering the PC as its second home and also publishing some games on rival consoles, for example LEGO Horizon Adventures which has also arrived on Nintendo Switch and Helldivers 2 which has arrived on Xbox.
However, there are those who believe that exclusive consoles have weight: let’s talk about Shawn Laydenwhich led Sony Interactive Entertainment during the bulk of the PS4 generation.
What Layden said about exclusives
Layden had his say at the podcast Pause for Thoughtdiscussing what’s right and wrong when it comes to exclusives.
“I don’t think every game it should be a console exclusive,” he said. “I don’t think every game it should be an exclusive, but I accept the fact that, if there are platform-related companies like Sony and Nintendo – Microsoft is actually more oriented towards the idea that ‘everything is an Xbox’ – it is it is important for the brand to be able to boast important exclusives“.
Phantom Blade Zero will be a PS5 console exclusive for twelve months
“If Mario started appearing on PlayStation, it would be the apocalypseRight? Cats and dogs living together. And the same goes for Nathan Drake and Uncharted. They are the ones who make the platforms sing,” he added, noting that multiplatform games are developed with the weakest platform on which they will be published in mind, so exclusives are a good excuse to make the most of the publisher’s platform.
Layden closes the speech by stating that There will continue to be exclusives in the futurebut “certainly if you aim for a massively multiplayer game then you almost necessarily have to be multiplatform because you have to create as large a space as possible to welcome people. Of course [devi puntare al multipiattaforma] se lo crei free to play”.
Xbox also has its own exclusive consoles, like Replaced which finally has a release date, after years and years of postponements.
