There are several “no”s that risk upsetting the balance between the Trevallions and the social workers. The latest is the one expressed by the tutor Maria Luisa Palladino during a new pediatric visit on the six-year-old twin. A recent decision, taken just before Christmas which, from a technical opinion, takes on, in the eyes of the defence, a despotic or, worse, instrumental appearance.
First, however, a step back. Having entered the family home in Vasto, the little girl underwent a complete examination, during which she was diagnosed with rather insidious “bronchitis with spasms”. Catherine Trevallion, the mother, immediately appears disoriented. Is it possible she hadn’t noticed? The suspicion of a pathology neglected by the parents immediately arises.
The judges of the Juvenile Court of L’Aquila will valorise the data in their provision (filed last week) writing verbatim: «The clues that can be obtained from the conduct of the parents in the discussions with the health and social-health authorities and in the context of this proceeding they would seem to argue in favor of a notable rigidity dependent on the values to which they (parents, ed.) conform their life choices…». And again, further on: «(It became necessary, ed.) to insist that the mother overcome her opposition necessary to treat the serious bronchitis with bronchospasm from which her daughter was suffering».
Catherine, however, is not convinced. He reflects. Rework. Hurt by the judges’ consideration, she relies on lawyers Marco Femminella and Daniela Solinas to urge a new pediatric visit. The idea is to have a trusted professional come, we think of a pediatrician from the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Chieti who, in this way, can visit all three children and perhaps reduce the previous opinion. The authorization request starts. Instead, denial arrives.
This is a “no” motivated by a double consideration. On the one hand, the visit is considered, so to speak, “superfluous” given the previous one which took place when the children entered the family home. On the other hand there is a technical issue. The visit of the professional would anticipate, in some way, the in-depth investigation ordered by the judges of the Court of L’Aquila. In short, it can’t be done. And here we return to the uncertain balance between the neo-rural couple and the social workers.
The doubt of the Trevallion defense is that they did not want to deny the narrative of the neglected bronchitis, in short, an inflexible and instrumental approach to the episode prevailed. Christmas falls on everything, a holiday denied, that too. With a limited visit (two hours and thirty minutes) granted to Nathan Trevallion.
Meanwhile, he was trained in the woods to support his family a movement of thousands of people who says he is ready to organize a form of protest that will last until the couple’s three children return home. From January 17th a camper will stop in front of the Palmoli farmhouse and every day dozens of people will take turns to demonstrate. This movement has no intended name, but it has a slogan, “The children are not of the State”, and it also has a spokesperson, who is called Paolo Lunghi. «Ours is a movement of opinion that was formed spontaneously on social media – explains Lunghi -. There are so many of us ready to give support to this family.”
