In the next few hours, the eye of the storm will be positioned over the Central Tyrrhenian Sea with a pressure of around 999 hPa (or equivalent millibars): from this position it will be able to attract further strong Bora, Grecale and Levante currents towards the Po Valley, the Upper Adriatic, the Marche, Tuscany and Liguria, while a sustained Sirocco will blow over the rest of the country.
Cold in the North, rising temperatures in the South
The different origins of the winds, together with the position of the cyclone, will favor the clear weather division of the country during this Christmas: in the Po Valley it will be cold with highs around 5°C and some other white flakes at low altitude especially in Emilia and Piedmont; from Rome downwards the thermometer will rise above 15°C, we will also find large sunny spaces except for thickening in Sardinia and on the Ionian belt.
We will therefore live a Christmas divided in two: pay attention, in particular, to the strong one Bora on the Upper Adriatic and at Fort Grecale or Tramontana also on Eastern Liguria, at low altitude snow which will return again in the evening in Piedmont (also on the Turin hills), caution obviously also in the open sea with waves of 3-4 meters on the northern sector of the Adriatic Sea and the Ligurian Sea offshore.
But, above all, extreme attention is still being paid in Emilia Romagna due to the flooding of the rivers with weather warnings up to red, the maximum.
So a Christmas of bad weather across half the countrysuitable for playing bingo and eating calmly and peacefully with our loved ones: “Christmas with your family, New Year with whoever you want”.
The improvement
Saint Stephen on the other hand, it will bring us a significant improvement: the last rainfall is expected in Piedmont until the morning, while it will still drip during the day on the Adriatic coast and on the Major Islands; subsequently the pressure will increase suddenly from 999 hPa at Christmas to 1018 hPa on Friday on the Tyrrhenian Sea, from 1015 to 1026 hPa also on the Po Valley.
This exceptional increase in pressure in 24 hours, +19 hPa on the Central Tyrrhenian Sea and +11 hPa on Northern Italy, will push the arrow of our barometer upwards, faster than a Ferrari! A sudden improvement that will give us lots of sun for the last weekend of 2025.
Sunny weekend
From Saturday onwards we will therefore experience a phase of high pressure with lots of sun and splendid days, without fog, without wind but with a significant increase in the freezing point in the mountains; therefore pay attention to the avalanche danger which is already “strong” in the Piedmont Alps: with a further increase in temperatures, the large amount of snow accumulated in recent days could slide spontaneously into the valley. A real danger, unfortunately.
End of the year with the sun
In summary il 2025after a final phase of bad weather, he will leave with the sun although a load of real frost from Russia is already ready for the New Year: the first week of January 2026 could offer white landscapes even on the plains in the Centre-South, an extreme projection for next year.
