The Lazio sent a harsh letter to the President of Serie A League Ezio Simonelli and to the Federal Councilors in Serie A quota, Giuseppe MarottaStefano Campoccia and Giorgio Chiellini, making a request for immediate intervention against the “constant refereeing errors” and asking for a table with Aia and FIGC, saying it is ready to “undertake every initiative permitted to protect its rights, the economic damage suffered also in consideration of the status of a listed company, sporting regularity and the respect due to its fans”. The latest disputed episode is the goal conceded to Udinese on Saturday in the last minute of injury time of the match at the Bluenergy stadium. The goal was scored by Davis, who had stopped the ball with an (involuntary) touch with his arm. Referee Colombo validated it because nine seconds passed from that touch to the goal, a time such that – even according to the refereeing leaders – there is no longer the “immediacy” mentioned in the regulation, which would have led to the annulment.
“The company is listed on the stock exchange, it has the right to fairness”
“It is considered necessary to highlight – we read in the letter – that SS Lazio is a listed company, subject to stringent obligations of transparency, management correctness and protection of value towards the market and its shareholders, to which the Club is called to respond also in relation to events and decisions that directly affect sporting, economic and financial results. (…) It is no longer tolerable that, during this championship, we continue to witness the repetition of refereeing episodes and VAR assessments inconsistent, heterogeneous and decisive, which are producing a clear sporting prejudice to the detriment of SS Lazio, while at the same time undermining the credibility of the entire system and generating significant economic damage”.
“Not a single mistake, but an unjustifiable sequence”
“This is not – underlines Lazio – a single, physiological error in sport. It is a sequence of episodes which, due to frequency, nature and impact, can no longer be archived as randomness. The perception, now widespread and documentable, is that of a non-uniform application of the criteria, with serious consequences on: the regularity and competitive parity of the Championship; the achievement of sporting objectives and the consequent economic consequences; the relationship of trust between institutions and the public; the protection of an entire fan base, beating heart of the entire system, which legitimately demands fairness and clarity, which are the basis of the credibility of this sport. Generational renewal cannot become an alibi, created to limit decisive errors, it cannot be perceived as a factor of further confusion or discretion”.
“An institutional table must be convened immediately”
“For these reasons, SS Lazio makes a formal and urgent request for intervention to the Lega Calcio Serie A, so that, within its competences and in conjunction with the FIGC and the competent technical bodies, immediate, concrete and verifiable initiatives are taken, and in particular: 1) Urgent convening of an institutional table promoted by the Lega Serie A, with the involvement of the FIGC and the competent referees, aimed at an operational discussion on the application criteria and critical issues encountered. 2) Formal feedback written, within the limits permitted by the regulations, on the most relevant episodes involving SS Lazio this season: not comments, but a clear reconstruction of the criteria adopted and the technical evaluations 3) Immediate uniformity of direction, through the definition and dissemination of binding and coherent operational guidelines on decisive cases (penalties, handballs, offside, violent conduct and serious fouls of play), with unambiguous VAR intervention thresholds 4) Structured transparency measures, compatible with the regulations in force. aimed at reducing the information void that fuels tensions and delegitimization: when a decision affects the result, a clear and timely institutional explanation cannot be missing. 5) Assumption of responsibility and quality control, so that repeated and macroscopic errors produce technical consequences in the evaluation, training and designation processes. Without this, any reference to “growth” risks remaining a formula devoid of content.
“We demand answers for the regularity of the championship”
“In the absence of timely feedback and concrete initiatives – concludes the letter – SS Lazio reserves the right to appeal to any competent institutional body and to undertake every initiative permitted to protect its rights, the economic damage suffered also in consideration of the status of a listed club, sporting regularity and the respect due to its fans”.
