The young woman died on Saturday evening, a few hours later her mother died. The death perhaps due to the fish-based dinner consumed on Christmas Eve. The father is also hospitalized. The Prosecutor’s Office orders an autopsy and the Campobasso Flying Squad investigates
A 15-year-old girl, Sara Di Vita, and her mother died in Campobasso within a few hours of each other. It is suspected poisoning due to food consumed during the Christmas holidays. The 15-year-old’s father, Gianni Di Vita, 55, also felt ill and is still hospitalized at the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso. The girl died on Saturday evening after being admitted to Cardarelli. His mother, Antonella Di Ielsi, aged 50, also died on Sunday morning.
The 15-year-old student lived in Pietracatella, in the province of Campobasso, and attended high school in the Molise capital. She had been feeling ill for a couple of days and had already gone to the emergency room together with the rest of her family. The health workers had immediately assumed that it was food poisoning, but perhaps they did not understand the seriousness and had sent the 15-year-old and her parents home. But on Saturday afternoon the situation suddenly worsened and the girl was admitted to intensive care where she died. The mother was also hospitalized at Cardarelli, where she died on Sunday morning. The father developed symptoms and was admitted to the same hospital. The only one not feeling sick is the 20-year-old sister of the deceased girl.
According to an initial reconstruction, the entire family would have been ill after dinner on Christmas Eve. A dinner based on fish, seafood and mussels, which however was attended by other guests who did not have any symptoms. After a few hours, father, mother and daughter, minus her twenty-year-old sister, felt ill. The entire family immediately went to the hospital’s emergency room, but they were sent back twice. On Saturday evening the illnesses increased: unbearable pain and colic, so much so that the family decided to return to the hospital. Daughter and father end up in intensive care, the mother in medicine. But the girl didn’t make it and died around 10.30 pm. Probably only the autopsy will clarify whether it was really intoxication or intolerance that caused the death of the girl and her mother.
«We are shocked, it is a tragedy that leaves us speechless – says the mayor of Pietracatella Antonio Tommasone -. The country is in disbelief in the face of such a tragedy, I express my condolences and those of the entire community to the family.” Antonella Di Ielsi worked with her accountant husbandGianni Di Vita, who in the past was a long-time councilor and mayor of Pietracatella. The Campobasso Prosecutor’s Office has ordered an autopsy on the victims’ bodies. The Flying Squad of the Molise capital is investigating the incident.
