The Jubilee is over, the construction sites are almost over. Here’s where the works are at in Rome

We are at the end, on January 6th the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica will be closed and at that point the Jubilee 2025 will be definitively concluded. But Rome is still in transformation, not only for the many Pnrr construction sites which will have to be completed by the middle of the new year. There are also works financed “ad hoc” for the Jubilee event such as pedestrianisation, recovery of meeting spaces, green areas, infrastructure.

The Jubilee construction sites

The latest decree of 31 July 2025 remodeled the program and 332 investment interventions were outlined for a total amount of 3.77 billion euros, of which 1.725 billion financed with Jubilee resources. Specifically, 205 “essential and non-deferrable” works and 127 “essential”. “As of 9 December, the program shows an overall very significant state of progress – says the mayor and extraordinary commissioner Roberto Gualtieri -, the result of an intense planning, coordination and implementation activity carried out over the last few months”.

A city in transformation

But where are the construction sites at, numbers in hand? Complex and long-awaited projects have recently been concluded, as the Capitol reports: the arches of the Ponte dell’Industria, Piazza della Moretta, the “Gabriella Ferri” cultural center in the 4th municipality, which has already started hosting events for the citizens of Tiburtino some time ago. And obviously the pedestrianized Via Ottaviano and the new Piazza San Giovanni are worth mentioning, as is the Vela di Calatrava area which hosted a million young people between July and August.

The iconic construction site of this Jubilee was without a doubt the one in Piazza Pia. The new square, with its two new circular fountains and the large steps that accompanies the walk up to the parapets of the Tiber, in the midst of a new grove of holm oaks and oaks, was inaugurated after 20 months of excavations, amidst surprises and twists.

Construction sites completed and those in progress

But it is important to understand the implementation status. Well, there are 121 completed interventions, 78 partially completed and nine in the finalization phase, with another 79 currently underway: “To these are added 11 interventions soon to be launched – continues the Mayor -, with a limited residual portion of interventions still in the planning or tender phase. Only two interventions have been cancelled, testifying to the substantial overall stability of the program”.

The use of resources

The percentages make the state of the art even more evident. In fact, based on the data provided by the Campidoglio, 86.4% of the interventions are “completed, in conclusion or in progress”, absorbing 74.8% of the overall resources and 95.8% of the assigned Jubilee resources. Also considering the interventions soon to be launched, these percentages grow further, “reaching almost 90% of the overall number of interventions and over 96% of the Jubilee resources”.

The “essential and non-deferrable” interventions are almost completed

Compared to the 205 “essential and non-deferrable” interventions, the Capitol informs that the percentage of those in progress, concluded or in conclusion is equal to 97.6%, and the resources used are close to 100% “both for the overall resources and for the Jubilee ones”.

At what point is “Caput Mundi”

We then move on to “Caput Mundi”, i.e. the Pnrr funding line dedicated to the 2025 Jubilee. In this case there are 336 interventions, with 106 completed, 218 in the implementation phase and 28 which were concluded in this last week of the year: “The interventions soon to be launched are limited to 12 cases – explains Gualtieri -, a sign of programming now fully underway and in an advanced stage of implementation”.
