The bora gives no respite and exceeds 110, firefighters still under pressure

The bora continues to lash the city and numerous interventions by the firefighters took place from 6pm yesterday evening, 24 December, to today’s morning, for a total of over eighty. A windy Christmas, as announced by the weather alert, in progress since the night between the 23rd and 24th. Until yesterday afternoon, around sixty firefighters had intervened in Trieste, and in the following hours the number of calls rose by over 20.

The problems did not only occur in the Julian capital but also in Monfalcone, Gradisca d’Isonzo, Ronchi dei Legionari and Staranzano, where trees fell. A fence also collapsed in Muggia.

Boa Paloma’s record

In the last six hours there have been gusts of up to 104 kilometers per hour on the coast between Monfalcone, Trieste and the nearby stretch of sea and yesterday the maximum gusts reached 113 km per hour (in Monfalcone).

In the last 24 hours the highest average speed was recorded by Boa Paloma (12 kilometers off the coast of Miramare, between Piran and Grado) with 77 km per hour, one of the highest values since 2002, the year in which observations began for this weather station.

Yesterday

Between 00.00 and 17.00 yesterday, 24 December, the firefighters had to deal with critical issues related to the bora which exceeded gusts of 100 kilometers per hour, among unsafe or fallen trees and branches, parts of scaffolding and other unsafe elements, torn or unsafe roof coverings.

The help of an operational team from the Gorizia command, one from the Opicina detachment and one from Muggia was even necessary, supported by two ladder trucks from the Julian command. At 5.00 pm there were around twenty interventions in progress.

Current situation

The depression present between Sardinia and the Balearic Islands and the anticyclone over Eastern Europe continue to favor the influx of currents from the east-northeast into the lower layers. Moderate bora is blowing in the region on the plains and eastern areas, still strong on the coast. Strong wind also in the high altitude Pre-Alps.

Evolution

In the morning, Bora will still blow strongly on the coast, with gusts likely to reach speeds of around 100-110 km per hour in the same areas. During the day, the moving of the baric minimum towards the west will favor a gradual attenuation of the intensity of the bora.
