Only You: who is the director Emiliano Locatelli

Emiliano Locatelli was born near Rome in 1984. Since he was a child he developed a great passion for cinema and the musical arts. In 2006 he was a member of the jury of the first Rome Film Festival chaired by Ettore Scola. He graduated in Cinema at La Sapienza University in 2008 with a thesis on Nicolas Roeg and St. Van Saint. In 2006 he was a member of the jury of the first Rome Film Festival, personally selected by the historic Italian director Ettore Scola.

In 2010 he obtained a master’s degree in Cinema at “ACT Multimedia” in Cinecittà, Rome. Meanwhile, he founded the company in 2009 The Whitedust Productions which mainly aims to produce experimental musical and audiovisual works. As a director he has made 3 short films, entitled Anarchist, Viva Violence e The educatorand some video clips for Italian groups such as Floorshow and Legittimo Brigantaggio. In 2016 he published his first novel “I am Vendetta”. He is also an electronic music producer under the pseudonym Whitedust.

The following are the words of Emiliano Locatellithe thought behind the creation of Only you.

Inspired by the masters of Italian cinema of the 60s and 70s (Petri, Rosi, Pasolini), Solamente tu aims for a committed cinema that also knows how to entertain. Alongside sudden overlaps – a tribute to Bertolucci’s Before the Revolution – with a wink to Godard’s Breathless, the short film inserts elements taken from genre films and stylistic features of much more recent languages such as video clips. Long, fixed shots, typical of a more artistic cinema, alternate with tighter editing. An engaged cinema, in fact, can and must return to being mass.

In this sense, even the choice of cast is functional to the ambitious mission. The collaboration with Enzo Salvi – a well-known comic actor who made his debut in the “cinepanettoni” of Boldi and De Sica, for the first time in a dramatic leading role, as well as co-screenwriter – testifies to the intention to add elements of ‘pop’ culture to a more authorial dramaturgical context. But aesthetics without ethics remains pure decorum.

The story of the social parable of the protagonist Enzo, a rich white man, aims to accompany the spectator’s reflection on the paradoxes of a world in which class differences still have their determining weight. Social prejudices precede racial or sexual prejudices, which very often aggravate the discomfort resulting from poverty of possessions.
