The ending of Alien (1979), explained

It’s one of the best movies of all time: that’s how “Alien” ends.

Alien, Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror masterpiece, gave birth to a film saga of enormous scope. The final battle between Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the xenomorph is still etched in the memory of fans of the genre, over forty years later. The film’s ending is so shocking that it’s still worth examining today.

In the last scenes, in fact, the xenomorph begins to kill the entire crew of the Nostromo, except Ripley. After discovering that Ash (Ian Holm) was a synthetic android, the crew decides to activate the ship’s self-destruct function and escape in the spaceship. After Parker (Yaphet Kotto) and Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) are killed, Ripley tries to disable the self-destruct, but ultimately escapes aboard the dropship as the Nostromo explodes. When she discovers that the xenomorph is on board with her, she releases him from the airlock and enters a cryogenic sleep, waiting to be rescued.

What happens to Ripley after the escape shuttle launches?

At the end of Alien, after defeating the xenomorph, Ripley continues into space aboard the Nostromo spacecraft. Before entering cryogenic sleep he records a short message explaining that the ship and its crew had been destroyed. Her hope is to be found by a spaceship once she reaches “the frontier”. In the sequel “Aliens” we discover that Ripley will be found by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, but only 57 years after the destruction of the Nostromo.

After the disastrous mission in the second film, Ripley and some of her crew are dumped in a maximum security prison in Alien 3. In that film, Ripley sacrifices her life to destroy a xenomorph queen, but her genetic material is harvested so she could be cloned for Alien: Cloning200 years later. Essentially, after escaping from the Nostromo, Ellen Ripley’s life is entirely dedicated to the fight against the xenomorphs.

What happens to the Xenomorph after the end of Alien?

At the end of Alien, Ripley ejects the xenomorph into the vacuum of space depressurizing the escape pod. However, he wouldn’t stay there for long, as in Alien: Romulus we discover that Weyland-Yutani had recovered the xenomorph’s carcass even before finding Ripley. Scientists used the xenomorph’s body to study its biology and artificially recreate the face chopperthe creatures that attach themselves to the faces of victims to implant the alien embryo. These experiments led to the extermination of almost all of the ship’s crew. Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her friends later met Renaissance and freed the facehuggers that had tormented them during Alien: Romulus.

The true meaning of the Alien ending

Every horror film leverages fear and Alien is no exception. On a superficial level, Alien may seem like a film about fear of the unknown. All of the creepiest moments revolve around the idea that humanity doesn’t know what might be out there, in the darkest corners of space, and that those creatures might have been specifically designed to kill us. Among other things, Alien also represents a valid reason why humans should fear both artificial intelligence and profit. Ash and Weyland-Yutani are the secondary antagonists of Alien for a reason. Both directly support and abet the xenomorph’s rampage, and if not for their shared lack of humanity, the crew of the Nostromo would never have died. It is only after Ash’s death and Weyland-Yutani’s abandonment of directives that Ripley manages to escape the xenomorph.

Because Alien is actually about humanity

In stark contrast to its title, Alien is primarily about humanity. Ash and Weyland-Yutani represent the evil that can be generated by machines and entities that have lost their humanity. Ripley, on the other hand, shows us how important human emotions such as compassion and empathy are. Throughout the film, the protagonist is the most “caring” member of the Nostromo, from her insistence on following quarantine procedures to returning to retrieve Jonesy, the cat. It’s probably thanks to her empathy that Ripley survived the ending of Alien.
