Presented in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festivalselected by Korea for the Oscar race, No Other Choice is a black comedy that Park based on the novel by Donald E. Westlake entitled “The Axe”, already brought to the screen by Costa-Gavras in 2005 with Headhunter. The story, in a nutshell, is that of a man who, after losing his job, tries to get another one by physically eliminating his competitors.
This is a statement from Park about his film:
“Some time ago I read a novel called “The Axe”. I picked it up because it was written by Donald E. Westlake, author of the novel from which ‘Without a Moment of Respite’ was based, one of
my absolute favorite films. Reading “The Axe,” I found myself identifying with the protagonist: a man who calls papermaking his life, whether the world recognizes it or not. I think the same way about cinema: this is why I easily understood a character who is convinced that there is a certain way of being for a head of family, and for a man, and who lives accordingly. After all, I’m a man with a family too. But I had no idea at the time that it would take me twenty years to make this film.”
