For fans of The Lord of the Rings, 2025 ends with the news that Viggo Mortensen will not return in The Hunt for Gollum but, given the Christmas period, we can always console ourselves with the 2026 calendar of The Lord of the Rings!
Il This year’s calendar will have as its theme the three “Great Tales” of Middle-earthstories written by JRR Tolkien, precursors to the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The illustrators of the calendar are always big names in the history of Tolkien publications: in 2026 the protagonist will be Alan Lee. The latter illustrated the first publications of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and also the First Age works of his son Christopher Tolkien. Lee’s role was not only linked to the editorial field: he collaborated with Peter Jackson on the concept art of the film adaptations. For the 2026 calendar Alan Lee signs the drawings and a preface: each month features a caption, a quote from one of the books that inspired the illustration of the page.
The “Great Tales”, part of the vast Silmarillion, delve into the First Age of Middle-earth. The first is the Children of Húrin: everything originates from Hùrin, a warrior cursed by Morgoth who extends the curse to his lineage made up of Túrin and Nienor. Their fate will be one of horror, pain and incest as the two will be separated and when they reunite, not remembering due to magic that they are brother and sister, they will get married. The second story is The Fall of Gondolin which tells, as the name suggests, the fall of the last stronghold of the Elves under the yoke of Morgoth. Finally, the third tells of the impossible love between Beren and Luthien and of the search for the Silmarils that will allow the man Beren to marry the elf Luthien.
In addition to the 2026 calendar, get ready: the new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will have lots of cameos!
