2025 had all the potential to be an unforgettable year for the science fiction at the cinema. Between original films and anticipated sequels, there was material for incredible stories, fascinating universes and spectacular plot twists.
Unfortunately, not all directors were able to take advantage of this opportunity. Alongside interesting titles like Companion and Resurrection, films have been released on the big screen that have turned potential into pure waste. From the most obvious mediocrity to real cinematic disasters2025 reminded us that not even a stellar budget guarantees success.
In fifth place we find The Electric State. Netflix has invested astronomical sums, fielding a high-level cast with Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Yet, the film manages to be boring. The story, set in a world where humans coexist with a robotic society, could have explored interesting themes such as technology and identity. Instead, everything is sacrificed for a predictable and emotionless family plotturning a potential blockbuster into two hours of pure cinematic routine.
In fourth place we find Predator: Wastelandsthe classic example of a mockbuster that tries to exploit the name of a famous franchise without offering anything new. Poor special effects, flat screenplay and characters without depth make this film a frustrating experience. Those hoping for action and tension will be disappointed.
In third place we find Runa low-budget alien thriller that fails on almost every front. The action appears awkward and poorly coordinated. Instead of creating tension, the film generates involuntary laughterturning the alien invasion into something comical.
Second place goes to M3GAN 2.0sequel to a film that had won over audiences and critics with horror and irony. In this new version, the robot protagonist completely loses her original charm. Black comedy and wackiness are replaced by a confusing approach, closer to generic sci-fi action film. The ending, clearly pro-AI, appears forced and not very credibleconfirming that the idea of replicating the success of the first film was handled without the slightest sensitivity to what had worked.
In first place of the worst sci-fi films of 2025 we find, without surprise, War of the Worlds (2025). A work that could have paid homage to HG Wells’ classic ends up being a total mess. Sloppy editing and poor acting turn the original story into a forgettable film. It’s amazing how such solid material can be reduced to such a disappointing experienceproving that even timeless classics can be destroyed by bad production.
If 2025 has taught us anything, it is that even with original ideas and large investments, without care and creativity, the result can turn into a disaster.
