ROVIGO – The city of Rovigo and the surrounding areas were hit by a violent water bomb accompanied by a whirlwind which caused extensive damage and flooding. The most critical situation occurred north of the city, where the tornado was spotted, sowing apprehension and fear among the population.
The tornado and the damage in detail
The force of the wind caused extensive damage, as evidenced by the destruction of an industrial warehouse in via Grandi. Pieces of sheet metal were lifted by the wind, ending up in the car park of the Aliper shopping centre, in Viale Porta Adige, where the damage was particularly severe. Burst glass and internal structures, such as panels and ceilings, which have collapsed, make the scene desolate, especially inside the center bar.
Other areas affected and damage observed
In addition to Rovigo, the whirlwind moved quickly towards the hamlets of Boara Polesine, Cantonazzo, Granzette, Lusia and Lendinara. In Cantonazzo, a tree was broken by the wind and fell on a car, fortunately without causing injuries.
The situation is also critical in the industrial districts
In the industrial area, the images show heavy objects carried in the air as if they were light sheets of paper, testifying to the violence of the wind.
Flooding and safety measures
The morning saw a heavy downpour hit the city around 10.30am, causing further flooding. Following this, the Marabin Bridge was closed, with the bridge now submerged under water.
