“Thanks to the intervention of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, huge new resources have recently been awarded to the Italian Railway Network (RFI) which will allow it to double the capacity of the Udine railway hub and proceed with the process that will also allow the removal of level crossings in the city of Udine in the future: it involves 40 million euros, funds that will be used to complete the entire ‘phase two’ of the complex and strategic intervention. The economic effort has been prepared to do in
so that the work financed to date, planned and already started, and which will end in 2025, can continue
also in 2026″.
This was explained by the councilor for Infrastructure and Territory of Friuli Venezia Giulia Cristina Amirante, who this afternoon, in Udine, spoke to the Council Commission on Territory and Environment convened by the municipal administration of Udine and meeting in the Ajace room, in Palazzo d’Aronco , to examine the issue of level crossings.
“The Udine railway hub is the main one for the Friuli Venezia Giulia region because it distributes goods, especially in the south-north route, and because it manages all passenger traffic in general – recalled Amirante -. There is therefore a need to enhance its capacity, with the addition of an extra track compared to the current route. There is also the need to move the goods station to a position that is separate from the one intended for passengers. The operation
has a total value of 280 million euros and the intervention that
requires consists of six work phases, to which you
adds the ‘zero phase’. The first two phases have already been
financed with an amount of 127 million, to which yes
add the additional 40 million recently invested

“The next step – continued the representative of the Executive –
Advertising
is the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ministry
of Infrastructure and Transport, Italian railway network,
Region and Municipality of Udine, to schedule the next ones
investments, so that the 280 million are financed
in full, with a calendar already programmed, as well as the
scheduling of the execution of the works that will lead to
much desired, necessary and desired by the whole city
of Udine, elimination of level crossings”.
Amirante explained to the commission how the times and costs
of the intervention are respectively not short and not small for
the complexity that such a construction site requires, with a
railway traffic which can only be suspended in certain periods
agreed time windows. He emphasized the importance of
proceed along the path already traced to succeed, at the end
of the planned works, to write a “new page of history, not
only for Udine and its citizens but for the entire region”.
