The municipal elections in Lecce ended amidst poison, threats and intimidation. And the Democratic Party deputy ended up in the crosshairs, Claudio Stefanazzi (former chief of staff of the Puglia Region), the regional councillor Alessandro Delli Nuts and the former municipal councilor Fabiana Cicirillo. Mayor Adriana Poli Bortone, in light of the incidents, asked and obtained from the Prefect Luca Rotondi the urgent convocation of the committee for public order and safety which will be held on Saturday morning.

The summit will be chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. «After the timely response of the prefect of Lecce, Luca Rotondi, who intended to immediately convene, at my request, the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security, the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, also wanted to respond to my invitation to clarify the latest episodes relating to threatening messages and intimidation that have affected political figures», states the mayor Adriana Poli Bortone. The summit was scheduled for July 3 but, following the availability of the minister, it was moved to Saturday.

In too many areas, abstentionism has won. Institutions and politics must reflect on this and find solutions to regain the trust of voters». Who adds: «The reasons are different and what is happening these days in the city of Lecce where three political exponents and current administrators have been violently threatened is certainly not good. I express – he added – all my closeness and support to the regional councilor Alessandro Delli Noci, to the honorable Claudio Stefanazzi and to the former municipal councilor Fabiana Cicirillo, victims of intimidating acts with a clear reference to the last municipal elections».
Loredana Capone, president of the Regional Council, concludes: “The political debate, the salt of democracy, cannot be tainted by these acts of violence, nor can we risk it being influenced in the slightest by this. We must all stand together to reject this aggression. Each must do so from their own role, of majority and opposition”.
