The Chiozza cemetery is falling apart

The cemetery of Chiozza that is falling to pieces. The photos taken document the signs of time, the degradation, the abandonment that certainly do not do decorum to those who rest in peace. A citizen reports it. Now the perimeter wall, which divides the old part from the new wing, is full of cracks and with a good part of the plaster that is visibly crumbling. The crumbly window sill of the wall, without an adequate drainpipe, is not better. Indeed, heavy rains are enough to worsen the situation: close to the walls, there are several family tombs that could be seriously damaged by the debris. The danger does not seem to spare even the tomb of the well-known Basini family, the ancestors of the honorable Giuseppe Basini, elected to the Italian Parliament in 1882, so much so that he became a collaborator of Giovanni Giolitti. The problem occurs in all the walls of the cemetery, while the small chapel that serves as a storage and sacristy when there are religious functions at the cemetery for the moment on the outside seems to be in sufficiently good condition. Then comes the problem of the electrical cables, scattered here and there, even uncovered, still guaranteeing the votive lights on the tombs. The citizen in question reports “to be up to date with the payment of electricity and if the Municipality of Scandiano does not forget to send the payment slips for the votive lamps, it should also remember to take this situation into consideration and make it safe”. And he reports that on the subject “on 14 April 2015 I filed a complaint with the Urp. However, without having received a response yet”. The years pass, we arrive at the era of Covid which blocks the work at the cemetery of Chiozza. “Chiozza Cemetery, in a year the work of arrangement and expansion will begin”, so the Carlino Reggio of 4 February 2020. Meanwhile, a generous bricklayer, Guido Gambarelli of Chiozza, a few years ago had offered to fix the wall which still has visible cracks and requires an intervention with plaster. Gambarelli asked the Municipality to be able to move personally even at his own expense. Let’s get to the present day: in the past few months, expansion work has been carried out by building 120 niches for small urns. At the moment it is not known whether the work has been completed, certainly the sign that illustrated the intervention has been removed. The citizen in question has been reassured about the expansion of the cemetery, so much so that he expects the long-awaited ordinary maintenance, which we write about for the umpteenth time. Now, however, he returns to ask that the cemetery be kept in a decent manner.
