A few days ago, the government announced that it was allocating 20 million for the construction of the military base in the ex-Cisam area in the middle of the San Rossore Park in Pisa. The decision is contained in Article 5 of the Infrastructure Decree approved by the Council of Ministers on Monday 24 June, which contains the “Urgent provisions for the completion of infrastructure interventions to allow the rapid and speedy construction of three works subject to receivership”.

The news was made public by Pisa city councilor Ciccio Auletta (Diritti in Comune) who has always supported the committees against the construction of the military base in Coltano, a project blocked precisely thanks to popular mobilization and that now the government and army – with the connivance of mayor Michele Conti – are trying to build a few steps away from the location originally planned. In fact, the mayor himself declared that the project for the new military base at Cisam is now “in place”, implying that the work is moving forward, without either the population or the city council having been consulted or even informed!

In the context of the Third World War increasingly less piecemeal in which our country is fully involved, we see clearly how the ruling class has no qualms about continuing with the work of militarization of the territories. In the Pisa area, in fact, the American base of Camp Darby already exists and in recent months various works have been done to improve the connection with the port of Livorno via the Fosso dei Navicelli and dozens of M-ATV armored vehicles have arrived at the base.

But Pisa is not the only city involved in the preparations for war: in Florence too there is the project to build the largest NATO Command in all of southern Europe in the Rovezzano district (against which the committee No NATO Command neither in Florence nor elsewhere was born) and that of doubling the size of the Peretola airport, most likely done to free up the Pisa airport from civilian transport and allow the expansion of the relative military airport.

Against the spiral of war into which the ruling class is throwing our country, it is essential to continue and nourish the work of mobilization and coordination of the dozens of committees and associations that fight against the militarization of the territories, against the war and against the subjugation of Italy to the imperialists NATO and EU. At the Tuscan level, for example, it is necessary to relaunch the confrontation between the No Base Movement – Neither in Coltano nor elsewhere and the aforementioned No Comando Nato committee in Florence and an opportunity to do so will be the table “For a network against bases and militarization” at the Fest8lina of Ottolina TV in Putignano (Pisa), to which we invite everyone to participate.

Only the organized popular masses will be able to stop the war of NATO! Only by coordinating against the militarization of the country will we be able to continue building an emergency government of the popular masses, which will put an end to the spiral of war and misery into which the governments of the Grand Intent are throwing us!

Not a man, not a penny, not a meter of land for the imperialists’ war!
