At Palazzo delle Arti Beltrani next Sunday an unmissable appointment with the king of swing, singer, saxophonist, author and performer accompanied by his legendary band The Giants

TRANI – A compelling and irresistible charge in a contagious and brilliant show, which captures and reflects every nuance of jazz and swing with unparalleled elegance. ‘Davide Santorsola’ is ready to enchant the Court of Beltrani Palace of Arts the most anticipated international guest of this 2024 artistic season. Ray Gelato, “the godfather of swing”, will be in Trani on Sunday 7th July for the festival Jazz a Cortand promises wonders with his exceptional ensemble “The Giants”.

The famous British saxophonist and singer, known for his verve and the empathy he immediately establishes with the audience, is beloved all over the world. An extraordinary performer with impeccable musical executions, Ray Gelato is a healthy carrier of his own trademark that has allowed him to infect the entire globe with swing, jazz and R&B music since 1988.

Ray Gelato has successfully rediscovered the playful and carefree spirit of much of the music in vogue in the 1940s and 1950s, making it his strong point. A swing influenced by great crooners and performers such as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter and Louis Prima, Sammy Davis Jr. and Louis Jordan, without forgetting the cornerstones of Italian tradition, especially Neapolitan. The references to Buscaglione, Carosone, Rabagliati and Natalino Otto are evident in his records and live performances.

Numerous are the successes that echo in the mind of each of us sung by his unmistakable voice. In his repertoire “Tu vuo’ fa l’americano” is linked to “Just A Gigolo”, “O Marie” with “Everybody Loves Somebody”, “Carina” with “I Ain’t Got Nobody”, “That’s Amore” with “Just One of Those Things”.

His music has been featured in many Hollywood films such as ‘Inventing The Abbotts’, ‘No Reservations’ and ‘The Perfect Man’. In 2022 his original song ‘Ding Ding’ was featured in the film ‘Lamborghini’ and the TV series ‘Godfather of Harlem’.

A multi-talented artist, he has performed at top international clubs, stages and festivals, including Montreal, Birdland in New York, the Blue Note in Milan and New York and The Lincoln Centre, also in the Big Apple. He is a constant presence at Umbria Jazz, also in 2023 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the festival. With an illustrious and successful career behind him, the legendary Ray Gelato and his band are regular guests at the famous Ronnie Scott’s in Soho, where they perform every Christmas, always recording sold out.

The Giants’ horn section, an expression of musicianship at its finest, has been hailed as one of the best in the business, and Ray has been compared to greats such as Cab Calloway and Louis Prima and called “one of the last great jazz entertainers.”

The Godfather of Swing has also played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, opened for Robbie Williams at the Albert Hall, and was chosen to play at Sir Paul McCartney’s wedding.

Ray Gelato’s career includes numerous albums. His ninth album ‘Wonderful’ received 5 stars from the Daily Telegraph.

According to the Times, however, “Whether he’s playing a Ben Webster-style romantic ballad or reinventing Boulevard of Broken Dreams with a huge R&B sound, the stylish, witty Gelato brings an unmistakable physical presence to the band on stage. He’s a larger-than-life character.”

Ray and The Giants recently celebrated their 25th anniversary with a series of concerts across Europe and released an album titled ‘Locked Down But Not Out’, recorded individually by the musicians at home during the period of isolation imposed by the pandemic.

Ray’s audience grows every year and is absolutely transversal for the simple reason that his contagious music cheers up anyone who listens to it. In him art and entertainment have always coexisted in harmony.

Swing king Ray Gelato, accompanied by his top-notch band “The Giants”, promises a high-energy show that never fails to get the crowd moving, clapping along and coming back for more.
