Sicily in the grip of drought

Sicily is a region that often faces problems related to drought due to arid climate conditions and scarcity of water resources. Drought can have serious consequences on agriculture, the environment and the daily life of citizens.
During droughts, agricultural crops suffer from lack of water, compromising the production of fruits, vegetables and cereals and causing economic damage to producers. In addition, the scarcity of drinking water can lead to supply problems and increase water prices, making daily life more difficult for the population.
To address drought, prevention measures and sustainable management of water resources are needed, such as building efficient irrigation systems, recycling wastewater and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. It is important to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving and using water resources responsibly, in order to protect the environment and ensure a better quality of life for all.
But how is the government moving in this regard?
The Council of Ministers approved the request of the regional council, with an allocation of 20 million euros for immediate interventions. The dossier sent by the regional government lists the actions to counter the crisis linked to the lack of rain.
The solutions proposed by the control room, led by Vito Schifani and Salvatore Cocina, include the purchase of tankers in the affected municipalities, the regeneration of wells, the strengthening of pumping systems and the construction of new pipelines. For agriculture and livestock farming in difficulty, exemptions from commitments with the EU and measures such as the postponement of tax deadlines and a moratorium on loans are being considered.
The Department of Agriculture has identified the need to activate the National Solidarity Fund to promote the recovery of production activity. A law is requested that allocates economic resources, following the model adopted in Emilia-Romagna last year. Farmers are asking for support to honor debts and face the crisis without income.
